It is the best Shogi theory book. Having learned rules of Shogi, what you should do is do a lot mate problems and read this book. Habu's words is a very good theory book, too. But it is more advanced, very hard to understand for a beginner. This book is especially good for beginner and those who is experienced but seems can't get any stronger/5(16).

As an introduction to shogi, I think this book is a good effort, but is somewhat rough around the edges. The does pretty well in walking through the very basics, but starts to jump into advanced strategy without covering mid-level strategy much. Leggett has many useful mottos and pointers to keep in mind (you need X number of pieces to drop /5(31).
